Woman clothed with the Sun

About

The name Mary takes root in "Mer", or "of the Sea".
Representing the emotional currents that flow within us
The potential healing
The capacity for profound transformation.

Using the connection to water to dive deep into our hearts.

Considering joys, sorrows, virtues & love
One's sorrows at world's sufferings.

In all times, we humans, have been perpetuating acts of destruction - not only of course.

This calling is not unique to our times. It is a reminder. Of what's too available in our times now.

I chose to create this project with Amal Alnabwany.
Amal is not a random choice to incarnate this symbolism of love, resilience and hope.
Amal is Syrian, she is from a holly land, she is from a land that goes through destruction. One most certainly linked to the other.

She has in her sorrows, death, fatalities, more than most of us.
Yet, she has made of her life the embodiment of generosity & grace.
The spectrum of her understanding of emotions from high to low is quite unique.

This project is to Resilience, to Peace.

Woman clothed with the Sun

an abstract photo of a curved building with a blue sky in the background

For me, this series beautifully portrays the rage, the blood, the darkness, the guttural presence and power of life in myself as a woman.
In this white Christian culture, we are shamed into fearing and devaluing these elements of femininity.

And yet, with audacious clarity, these elements are claimed and honoured with deep reverence to the whole woman.
The embodiment of the raw and anchored sensuality is both stirring and enriching.

I feel so validated and alive seeing these parts of myself reflected back to me. More please.

Medusa

About

Medusa story was never about a monster,
It was always about a woman burned for a Sea God’s sin,
A pawn in an ancient game,
The fates would never let her win.

Her snakes kept her safe from the wandering eyes,
Those who came to her, reaching for
Her life
Her body
Her power.
She has now a garden full of statues in honor of their greed.

Medusa story was about a Priestess. Goddess. A maiden who once had a heart of gold.

Medusa

About

Boundless imagination,
Possible impossibles,
In between suspended.

It took us more than one attempt to realize that shot as the inclusion of an accessory in underwater photography brings always specific challenges - buoyancy, depth, movements.

On this project I asked Tristan Pennet to be the model as I knew he wouldn't back down the opportunity to do something a little crazy

His words: "It's always a good idea when your friend present it to you... Then you are suddenly in it, shivering at the surface, getting your sinuses drained on every dive, blowing all the air from your lungs, thinking "What the heck have I gotten into?". And then the result proves that it wasn't a good idea but a GREAT one! Thank you Laura for giving me the opportunity to take a nap underwater. Wouldn't have done it without you. "

This photo is being nominated for the Exposure One Award 2025.

The Dream state

Forgotten Angels

About

Too often the world tries to silence brillance
Bury the light beneath the chains, shadows, stereotypes
Yet, the rise is seen in each song, each smile, each act of resistance, a reminder of the sacredness within.

Honoring each one of us, is how we learnt remember our own humanity.

Feminity

About

Wild and Impactful force of nature
Like an Earthquake, Blazing Wildfire, Sweeping Tsunami

Letting go of our systems of oppression: patriarchy, domestication, power-over, conditioning

Erotic power and sexual expression unleashed and unshamable
Embodied sexuality as a form of freedom

Taking many forms, all perfection
What else could it be?
"Too much? Not enough?" Says who? The voice of conditioning?

Feminine gifts. Radiant treasure.
In truth, power innately beams from the depths of our whole being.

Remember, the feminine resides within all.
Yin & Yang
Shakti & Shiva
Moon & Sun

It is only one face of the coin

The Gateway

About

Enclosed
"I'm in the dark" - One says "I can't see"
I wonder "who's asking?"

This is when photography brings the experience of concentration, centegness, to the moment.

The breath is paused
Silence becomes
Presence is key
Embodiment appears

Only back to the surface, the mind surfaces too and starts doubting "I'm in the dark"
Yet the light was on all along.

Cultivating those moments of pure presence
To bring the omnipresent light
When darkness encloses us.

I took this shot enclosed in a tiny underwater cave.
Making sure not to touch the walls around me that could hurt me or damage my gears.
Making sure I will not disturb its inhabitants.

Jimmy Jeantot, an experienced Freediver, plays the model here.

Where the light comes in

About

There is no hiding,
Don't turn away
Keep your gaze where the wound is

This is the place where the light comes in.

Forget to die
Remember to live
Fall, rise, fall again

Nurture the pain
Until you learn all aim
was in the end,
useless.

All along, by looking outside
You missed you on the inside

It was I missing I
It was I needing to love I,
For the light to enter.

I had the drawing of the first photo in my sketchbook for about a year. Initially I drew a man.
One day, I sat with Helena Bourdillon and showed her my drawing. She immediately understood it. When I asked her to work with me on this one, her reaction was only a confirmation she was the one.

Here's what people say

”I did my very first shoot with Laura recently with zero modeling experience so I was quite anxious about it. Laura made it so easy for me, she knew exactly what would work and what wouldn’t. I got the best photos of my life out of that shoot and will definitely be doing more with her!”

- Dexter MacDonald, Canada

”I really loved working with Laura, both as Safety Diver and Model. She brought out-of-the-beaten-track ideas and left a lot of space for suggestions. She very well communicates her needs, without making hard statements, and quickly puts you into a mindset of confidence and trust. I hope I get a chance to work with her again, both in front of the camera or behind the scene.”

- Tristan Pennet, Canada

”My experience with Laura was unbelievable. We chose taking the shots in a pool where I trained for hours for the Iron Man race. She helped me being aware of my breathing and of my body, while trying to "look good" on the pictures. It was such a fun experience! Can't wait to try it again, in the sea next time.”
